She Sat in My Driveway From March to July Over Two Bolts I Could Touch With a Finger
The dealer wanted $2,800 to turn them. Not to fix anything — to reach them. Here's the four months I spent finding out why, and the thing a stranger handed me at a truck show that did both of them in forty minutes.
Two things about the tool in this story, before Mike gets to it.
It stops at 53 ft-lb. 72 Nm. Past that the chain slips instead of loading your fastener any harder. That is the ceiling and it is the honest one.
So the sequence is: break it loose first, then reach. Heat, penetrating oil, a breaker bar on a stub — whatever cracking a seized fastener actually takes. This tool is for the part after that, the forty turns of run-out in a space with no swing room, and the forty turns of run-in when the new one goes back.
Anybody selling you one tool that does both is selling you the disappointment with it.
I'm not a mechanic and I'm not selling anything. I haul freight.
But if you run an LML, you already know which two bolts I mean.
That truck pays my mortgage. Nineteen years I've done my own work on her — brakes, injectors, the turbo twice, the CP3 swap at three hundred thousand like everybody eventually does. She's got 463,000 on her. That isn't big-rig math, that's a lot of four-hundred-mile round trips and one man who never let anybody else under the hood.
And she sat four months in my own driveway because of a fastener I could put my finger on.
That's the part that still gets me. Not that I couldn't reach it. I could reach it. I just couldn't turn it.
The EGR cooler on an LML runs exhaust gas past your engine coolant through a core made of thin steel. That core cracks. Not if — when. Somewhere between eighty and a hundred and twenty thousand miles it starts weeping coolant into the intake, and you lose a little out of the tank every week and never once find a puddle under the truck, so you tell yourself it's a hose.
Then it sits overnight and the coolant runs downhill into a cylinder. You hit the key in the morning, the piston comes up on a cylinder full of liquid, and liquid doesn't compress.
That's a bent rod. Sometimes the block goes with it.
Mine started throwing a P24C4 in March. So I knew. And knowing is the easy part.
The cooler sits in a pocket behind the turbo. Coolant lines cross in front of it, the heat shield wraps around it, and the firewall is right there behind. Seven bolts hold it. Five of them come out like normal bolts do.
The last two are the bracket bolts on the back. They sit in a gap you can get two fingers into and not a swing. Eight years of heat cycles and Missouri road salt have been working on them the whole time.
Go on the Duramax forums and the answer you'll get is to lift the cab. That is also what the factory book says: pull the cab off the truck, or drop the transmission out from under it, to reach a bracket you can see with a flashlight.
You don't have to lift the cab. But you do need a tool that doesn't fold when you load it, and every tool I owned folded.
I went at those two bolts the way everybody does, in about the same order.
Universal joint and a socket. Got on it. Second I pulled, I felt the socket start to climb the head, and I backed off before I did real harm. A U-joint working at an angle doesn't even turn evenly — the speed rises and falls twice a revolution, so the bolt takes a pulsing load instead of a steady one.
Wobble extension. Same story with better manners. Eight degrees of tilt is nothing to look at and it's plenty. I got two pulls in before I felt a corner go soft.
Three extensions taped together. Everybody does this and nobody admits it. Twenty-four inches of steel, taped at the joints so they don't drop into the abyss, and when I leaned on it the whole stack wound up like a spring and then gave it all back to me. Wet noodle. There's no better way to say it.
Flex-head ratchet. It fit beautifully. Head angled perfect, click was satisfying. Then I found out I had about six degrees to swing it in before the handle hit aluminum shielding, and it folded before the bolt moved at all.
Somewhere in there I tried a crow's foot too, which sits ninety degrees off your force and levers on the head. That one I don't want to talk about.
Here's the thing I only understood later. The second a socket sits at an angle it stops touching six flats and starts pressing on two corners, and the corners are the thinnest metal on the whole head.
So it rounds. Not because you pulled too hard. Because the load had nowhere sensible to go.
It wasn't my hands. It was the shape of everything in my box.
So I did what you do. I called the dealer. Not to book it — to hear the number.
Service writer put me on hold, came back, and did the math out loud. Cab off. Two-tech job. Better part of a day. $2,800. Eight hours of labor at $145 an hour, plus the part.
He wasn't trying it on. That is what cab-off labor costs, and the national average shop rate last year was $142.82, so he wasn't even high. The book pays him to take his time reaching a thing I had already half reached.
And I've paid shop bills my whole life. I'll pay them again. But there's a difference between paying a man for skill I don't have and paying him for room I don't have, and that one sat wrong with me.
Then I did the rest of the arithmetic, which nobody itemizes for you.
$2,800 on the invoice. Four days minimum with my truck on their lot. Two loads I'd have to hand to somebody else, and one of those was a customer I'd hauled for since 2011. And underneath all of it, the thing that actually kept me up: a job that had always been mine quietly turning into a job I book.
I told him I'd think about it.
I thought about it for four months.
By June I'd started coming in the side door.
You know how that goes. You pull in, and there's a truck sitting there that you are supposed to be able to fix, and you don't look at it. Becky asked me once, flat, the way she asks things — "You're not paying that, are you." Then she went back out to the garden. She'd already worked it out. She was just waiting on me.
One evening I went out to the shop to do something about it and ended up doing nothing at all.
I sat down on the shop floor. Not because I planned to. Because that's where I ended up.
Nineteen years of doing my own work, and I was hiding from a bolt.
End of June I went to MATS. Mostly to get out of the house.
There was a fella there, older than me, tailgate down and his tools laid out on it. Earl. Sixty-seven, out of Mountain Home, Arkansas, thirty years at a Peterbilt dealership before he quit and started doing what he wanted. We got to talking about the EGR job the way you do at those things.
He didn't say much about it. He picked a flat orange bar up off the tailgate and put it in my hand.
I thought it was an extension. It isn't.
It's a flat steel bar about as long as your forearm. There's a square drive on each end. A socket clips onto one end and sits square on the bolt, and your hand turns the other end, six inches away, out where there's actually room to move. Inside the bar runs a steel roller chain that carries the turn from your hand around the corner to the socket. One turn in, one turn out.
Earl said, "Press on it."
I pressed on the square drive. Inside the bar, something moved. Not flex. Not wobble. A chain.
The bar doesn't turn anything. The chain does. There's no joint to fold, no coupling to flex, nothing to walk off a bolt head when you load it.
I stood there a second working out why that mattered, and then I had it. Nothing in the path is at an angle. The socket sits flat on the bolt the way a socket is supposed to. Every bit of damage I'd done in March came from tilting, and this thing doesn't tilt. It's about six tenths of an inch thick, and that's the entire clearance it needs. Not swing room. Clearance.
Then he told me what it won't do, which is the reason I listened to the rest of it.
Fifty-three foot-pounds and the chain slips. Break a seized fastener loose first with heat and a breaker bar, then use this for the reach and the running out. It won't rescue a bolt you've already rounded — nothing short of an extractor will. And if your gap is tighter than six tenths, it isn't going in.
I have been sold a lot of tools by men who told me they did everything. That was the first one where somebody led with the limits.
Here's what actually sold me, and it wasn't Earl.
Two rows over there was a fella named Tony out of Lexington with an LBZ and the same complaint on a starter bolt behind the exhaust. Earl walked over with the bar, slid it into the gap between the heat shield and the coolant line, and the socket seated flush on the head. No rock. He handed it to Tony.
Tony turned it out himself. On his own bolt, with his own hands, in front of me.
I've watched a hundred tools get demonstrated by the man selling them. That's not proof, that's a magic trick. Watching a stranger's face change on a stranger's bolt is a different thing entirely.
Nothing rides on the corners. The socket sits flat because nothing in the path is tilted. Load lands on the flats of the hex, where the strength is. That is the whole difference between this and a U-joint.
Six tenths of an inch is the requirement. If the bar lies flat between your fastener and whatever's in the way, it fits. Measure the gap at the tightest point — that's a measurement, not a promise.
It takes your own sockets. Three-eighths drive, with 3 adapters + a 1/4" hex socket in the case. Nothing proprietary, nothing to buy again.
It reaches. It's honest about the rest. A bolt like the ones on that bracket breaks loose at more than this tool will ever put out, and that's what the breaker bar is for. What it takes to run out forty turns of thread is a fraction of what it takes to crack it — and running out forty turns is exactly the part you can't get a swing on.

Saturday morning I went out with a cup of coffee. Put a breaker bar on a stub first, the way Earl said, felt each one crack loose. Then the chain wrench went in and I ran them out.
Forty minutes. Both bolts. Eight years of heat on them and neither one rounded.
The cab never came off. Nobody touched my truck but me.
She was back hauling the third week of July, and she's been hauling since.
It doesn't live in the shop. It rides behind the seat, because the trouble travels with the truck.

Is this one of those Facebook things? Fair question, and you should be asking it about everything sold this way. Here's what I'd check in your position, and it works on us or anybody else. One: is the torque rating published, and is it published as a ceiling? Two: is the return window long enough to actually use the tool in? Three: who pays return shipping? Ours are 53 ft-lb, 100 days, and we do. If a seller ducks any of the three, keep your money.
Why is there a cheaper one that looks the same? Because it is nearly the same bar and several people sell it. Run the three questions above on each of them and buy whichever answers all three. We would rather you bought a good one from somebody else than a bad one from us.
I already own something like this. Then use it. The only question that decides this is the gap at your fastener — measure it, and buy whatever fits it.
What happens past 53 ft-lb? The chain slips. That's on purpose. It is the failure mode that leaves your fastener intact instead of rounding it, and it's why the ceiling is published instead of buried.
Will it get out a bolt I've already rounded? No. Nothing short of an extractor will. This gets you to a fastener. It doesn't rescue a wrecked one.
Why 100 days and not 30? Because a tool like this doesn't get used the day it arrives. It goes in the box, and the box goes in the truck, and it sits there until the job that needed it finally turns up — a starter in February, an EGR in March. A 30-day window on a tool that waits isn't a guarantee, it's a countdown to a refund you were never going to be able to claim. 100 days means you find your job first, use the thing on it, and then decide. No restocking fee, and you don't have to explain yourself to anybody. Two years on the chain — if it gives up, we replace it.
For what it's worth on the other side of that: under 1% of orders come back.
